Digital Transformation for a Maritime Leader

Cost-effective quality through aligned onshore-offshore delivery.

Digital Transformation for a Maritime Leader

Corvx established and scaled a dedicated offshore development center (ODC) for a global maritime classification society, enhancing their digital solutions and nautical systems products across multiple business units. Starting with a 6-person team, we grew to 18 engineers within a year—spanning DevOps, QA automation, Java development, and UI engineering—aligned with onshore teams across the US, Singapore, India, and the Philippines.

The client is one of the world's leading maritime classification organizations, with operations spanning over 70 countries. They provide safety and compliance solutions for the marine and offshore industries, certifying vessels and maritime assets. As the industry digitized, they needed to modernize their nautical systems software and digital fleet management tools—but scaling their internal engineering capacity across global offices was proving slow and expensive.

What stood in the way

01

Global Team Coordination

Engineering resources were distributed across the US, Singapore, India, and the Philippines. Aligning sprint cycles, code standards, and communication across 4 time zones was creating friction and delivery delays.

02

Legacy System Modernization

Core nautical systems were built on aging Java frameworks with tightly coupled architectures. Enhancing functionality or improving the UI required navigating decades of technical debt.

03

Cost-Effective Scaling

Hiring senior engineers in their primary markets was becoming prohibitively expensive. They needed a partner who could deliver equivalent quality at a sustainable cost structure.

How we solved it

Dedicated Offshore Development Center

We stood up a structured ODC with DevOps engineers, QA automation specialists, Java developers, IBM Maximo developers, and UI engineers—all integrated into the client's existing workflows, tools, and ceremonies.

System Enhancement & Modernization

Tackled tasks ranging from improving core functionality and UI/UX to optimizing system performance. Implemented Agile methodology with continuous improvement cycles and regular stakeholder reviews.

Seamless Global Integration

Our team operated within the client's tools (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket) and participated in their sprint ceremonies. Weekly sync meetings with all regional stakeholders ensured alignment and early risk identification.

The ODC model delivered significant cost savings while maintaining—and often exceeding—the quality standards of the client's onshore teams. The partnership expanded from a single product to three business units within 18 months.

Month 1-2: Build

2 months

Team assembly, onboarding, tool access provisioning, and knowledge transfer sessions with onshore engineers.

Month 3-6: Operate

4 months

Full integration into sprint cycles. First deliverables shipped. QA automation framework established. Regular performance reviews.

Month 7-12: Grow

6 months

Team expanded from 6 to 18 across multiple business units—Nautical Systems, WaveSight, and Digital Fleet.

Ongoing: Optimize

Continuous

Process improvements, tooling upgrades, and knowledge sharing across the global engineering organization.

What we brought to the table

Offshore Delivery Center

Dedicated team spanning DevOps, QA, and development—growing from 6 to 18 engineers.

System Enhancement

Modernized legacy nautical software: improved UI/UX, performance, and functionality.

Global Alignment

Seamless integration across 4 time zones with shared tools, ceremonies, and standards.

Build-Operate-Grow

We didn't just provide bodies—we built a self-sustaining engineering capability within the client's ecosystem. The ODC operates as an extension of their global team, not a separate vendor.

The team's efficient efforts resulted in major enhancements to our products. We benefited from significant cost efficiencies without sacrificing quality. They feel like part of our organization.
